Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls from the official, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
