Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
